Milwaukee's current press-tool lineup spans compact M12 and higher-capacity M18 FORCE LOGIC platforms, plus specialized M18 configurations. The useful comparison is not simply battery voltage: it is the fitting systems, sizes and attachment families each tool can actually support.
Current vs. legacy matters
Milwaukee's 2026 matrix identifies 2573-20 as the current M12 FORCE LOGIC press tool and lists 2473-20 as discontinued. It identifies 2922-20 as the current standard M18 FORCE LOGIC press tool and lists 2673-20 and 2773-20 as discontinued in that standard family.
That does not mean every legacy attachment is obsolete. It means compatibility should be checked against the exact model generation rather than inferred from the M12 or M18 badge alone.

M12 vs. M18: choose by the largest required connection
The M12 is compelling when its system-specific ceiling covers the entire job. Milwaukee describes the 2573 as an in-line tool for copper, PEX, black iron, stainless steel and ACR applications, with a 180-degree rotatable head, auto-cycle and ONE-KEY reporting. But those general material claims still have to be narrowed to the actual fitting system and attachment family.
The standard M18 2922 is the more natural platform when larger CTS sizes, 2-inch MegaPress work or broader standard-family rings are expected. Milwaukee states that the 2922 family supports fitting systems up to 4 inches depending on material and system, and its current matrix maps the required M18 jaws/rings for each fitting family.
Choose M12 when…
- Tight access and one-handed in-line use are frequent priorities.
- Your largest verified fitting-system size stays within M12 limits.
- You already own M12 batteries and approved M12 attachments.
- You want a compact press tool without moving to a larger platform unnecessarily.
Choose M18 when…
- The job includes larger ProPress/XL or standard-series ring work.
- MegaPress requirements exceed the M12 1-inch limit.
- You need the broader standard M18 attachment ecosystem.
- Your workflow favors one press platform across a wider size range.
Milwaukee jaw and ring families are system-specific
Milwaukee's current compatibility matrix separates CTS-V, IPS-P, ACR/refrigeration and PEX attachment paths. It also shows where selected RIDGID or other third-party attachment families are listed. That is more useful than a generic statement that a tool “presses copper” or “presses black iron.”
Current M12 2573 vs. older 2473
The 2473 remains important because used tools and older kits are still in the field, and Milwaukee's current matrix explicitly carries it as the discontinued predecessor alongside the 2573. That is useful compatibility context, but it should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every current 2573 feature or kit configuration applies to the older tool.
For a new purchase, the current 2573 product information is the better baseline. For an existing 2473, use the compatibility matrix and the exact attachment part number rather than a retailer listing that simply says “M12 compatible.”

ONE-KEY, auto-cycle and service interval: useful, but secondary to compatibility
Milwaukee's current M12 and M18 press-tool pages emphasize auto-cycle, a pre-press battery check and ONE-KEY tracking/reporting. The M12 2573 page states a 37,000-cycle interval between service inspections, while the M18 2922 page advertises a 50,000-cycle calibration interval.
Those features matter to contractors managing tools and documentation, but they do not change the first selection question: whether the press tool and attachment are approved for the fitting system and size. A successful tool cycle is not a substitute for correct tube preparation or the fitting manufacturer's installation steps.
