Fastest common-size setup
The jaw mounts directly into the press tool and closes around the fitting. Direct jaws dominate many common ProPress and smaller MegaPress sizes.

Press jaws are not universal accessories. A correct setup depends on the exact press tool, fitting system, attachment family and size—and larger sizes often move from direct jaws to rings and actuators.
A press jaw is part of a system, not a generic accessory
Before buying a jaw or ring, verify tool model + attachment family + fitting system + size + approval status. Physical fit alone is not enough.
Use the Press Jaw & Ring Compatibility Finder when you already own a tool or attachment and need to know what it can be used with.
The jaw mounts directly into the press tool and closes around the fitting. Direct jaws dominate many common ProPress and smaller MegaPress sizes.
A ring can improve access and handle sizes that are impractical for a direct jaw. The ring does not attach to the power tool by itself.
The actuator or ring jaw transfers force from the press tool into the ring. It must be approved for both the ring and the tool family.
RIDGID's current ProPress documentation is a useful example. Compact Series ProPress jaws cover 1/2 through 1-1/4 inch and are designed for Compact Series tools. Standard Series ProPress jaws cover 1/2 through 2 inches and are designed for Standard Series tools.
| Family | ProPress direct-jaw range | Example catalog numbers |
|---|---|---|
| RIDGID Compact Series | 1/2–1-1/4 in. | 16958 (1/2), 16963 (3/4), 16978 (1), 31228 (1-1/4) |
| RIDGID Standard Series | 1/2–2 in. | 76652, 76657, 76662, 76667, 76672, 76677 |
Those catalog numbers describe a jaw family and size; they do not create cross-family interchangeability. If you own an RP 251 Compact tool, a Standard Series jaw is not an upgrade path for larger size—it is a different interface.
| System | Pipe/tube basis | Common attachment pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Viega ProPress | CTS copper / approved stainless systems | Compact or standard CTS direct jaws; XL-C rings for larger sizes. |
| Viega MegaPress | IPS carbon steel / stainless / other MegaPress families | IPS direct jaws at smaller sizes, then rings + actuator; XL tooling at 2-1/2–4 in. |
| PureFlow | PEX / multilayer | PureFlow-specific press jaws; not interchangeable with CTS metal-system jaws. |
| RLS / ZoomLock / ACR | Refrigeration copper OD sizes | System-specific HVAC/R jaws and, at selected sizes, ring/adapter arrangements. |
Cross-brand compatibility is real in selected cases. Milwaukee's current compatibility matrix lists specific RIDGID jaws and rings for certain Milwaukee tools. But that does not make all RIDGID jaws compatible with all Milwaukee tools, and it does not override the fitting manufacturer's requirements.
The safest cross-brand check uses the exact tool model and exact attachment catalog number. If one manufacturer says the combination is approved while another current document conflicts, PipeTradesTools.com labels the result conservatively rather than converting physical fit into manufacturer approval.
Two jaws can look nearly identical while belonging to different tool families or fitting profiles. Manufacturer catalog numbers remove that ambiguity. For example, RIDGID identifies Compact ProPress jaws with one set of catalog numbers and Standard ProPress jaws with another; the nominal 1-inch size alone does not tell you which tool interface the jaw uses.
Catalog numbers are also useful when buying used attachments. A seller may describe a jaw as “RIDGID ProPress 1 inch” or “Milwaukee copper jaw,” but the exact part number is what allows you to check the current compatibility matrix. If the part number cannot be confirmed, treat compatibility as unverified until the manufacturer documentation can be matched.
Before putting a used jaw or ring into service, inspect it according to the tool manufacturer's instructions. Correct compatibility does not compensate for a damaged attachment, excessive wear, debris in the profile or a ring/actuator that is not operating freely.
Sometimes selected cross-brand combinations are manufacturer-approved, but press jaws are not universally interchangeable. Compatibility depends on the exact tool model, jaw or ring part number, fitting system and size.
A direct jaw mounts on the press tool and closes around the fitting. A press ring wraps around the fitting and is driven by a separate ring jaw or actuator. Rings are often used where size or access makes a direct jaw impractical.
No. RIDGID Compact and Standard attachment families use different interfaces. RIDGID’s current ProPress jaw pages identify each family separately and list their intended tool classes.
No. Milwaukee M12 and M18 direct jaws use different interfaces. Use the attachment family approved for the exact M12 or M18 tool model.
Yes. ProPress and MegaPress are different fitting systems with different profiles and pipe standards. A ProPress CTS jaw is not a MegaPress IPS jaw even if the nominal size looks similar.
Check the ring marking and the current manufacturer compatibility documentation. Rings are tied to specific actuator or ring-jaw families, and large-diameter systems can require specialized actuators or boosters.
