The right MegaPress setup changes with pipe size. Smaller connections may use direct jaws, mid-range sizes move to rings and actuators, and 2-1/2 through 4 inch MegaPress requires a dedicated large-diameter tooling path.
MegaPress is an attachment-system decision
For MegaPress, the power tool alone is not enough. The selected fitting size determines whether you need a direct jaw, a press ring + actuator, or a large-diameter XL ring/high-output setup.

Viega's current standard MegaPress jaw-and-ring set makes the transition clear. The set includes direct MegaPress jaws in 1/2, 3/4 and 1 inch, then MegaPress rings in 1-1/4 through 2 inches with a V2 actuator. Larger 2-1/2 through 4 inch MegaPress work uses a separate XL architecture.

Milwaukee M18 and RIDGID Standard Series platforms support larger MegaPress jaw/ring ecosystems. Standard tools are the normal starting point when 1-1/4 and 2 inch work is common.
Viega specifies MegaPress XL rings with the appropriate PressBooster or Z3 actuator arrangement for these large sizes. A standard jaw kit does not simply “scale up.”

“MegaPress” is often used as shorthand for pressing black iron or carbon steel, but Viega offers multiple MegaPress families. Current documentation covers carbon steel, stainless steel and CuNi variants, with application-specific sealing elements and fitting approvals.
That is why this site does not recommend a jaw from pipe diameter alone. A valid result needs the fitting system, material, size and exact attachment family. The same nominal 1-inch pipe size does not make a ProPress CTS jaw appropriate for a 1-inch MegaPress IPS fitting.
For 2-1/2 through 4 inch MegaPress, Viega's current installation instructions specify MegaPress XL rings and either the MegaPress XL PressBooster or the Viega MegaPress Z3 actuator, depending on the approved tool setup. Viega also warns not to mix incompatible rings and actuators.
Before buying large-diameter rings, verify the exact power tool, actuator/booster, ring size and fitting family as a single approved system. This is one of the areas where a generic retailer “fits this tool” statement is not enough.
Moving from a direct jaw to a press ring changes more than the accessory list. The ring has to wrap around the fitting and the actuator still needs room to engage it. Viega publishes clearance dimensions for standard jaws, compact jaws and ring/actuator combinations because nearby walls, floors and installed piping can determine whether a nominally compatible setup is practical.
For retrofit work, check access before assuming a larger standard tool is the easiest choice. A compact approved setup can be preferable at smaller MegaPress sizes, while a pivoting ring can solve access problems at larger sizes. The right answer is the approved attachment that can physically be positioned around the actual fitting—not simply the highest-capacity tool in the truck.
Large-diameter XL equipment also adds weight and cost, so contractors who only occasionally encounter 2-1/2 through 4 inch work may want to compare rental or dedicated-job economics rather than treating XL tooling as a routine extension of a 1/2–2 inch kit.
