Milwaukee Pipe Threaders: 2870 Compact vs. 2874 Full-Size

Milwaukee's current pipe-threading lineup centers on two M18 FUEL platforms: the compact 2870 through 1-1/4 inches and the full-size 2874 through 2 inches. They share a battery platform but use different primary die-head ecosystems.

Milwaukee's 2870 Compact and 2874 full-size models share the M18 platform and ONE-KEY branding, but they should not be treated as the same threader in different sizes. Their capacity and primary die-head interfaces differ.

2870 Compact: a distinct head system

The 2870 is designed around Milwaukee Compact forged-aluminum die heads in common 1/2, 3/4, 1 and 1-1/4 inch sizes. Milwaukee describes it as a service/repair-oriented solution and documents black iron, stainless steel and rigid metal conduit among supported materials.

The compact interface is important. A user moving from a 2874 or another 12-R-style full-size system should not assume the existing complete heads transfer. The Die Finder treats 2870 Compact as its own head family.

2874: full-size cordless threading and 12-R compatibility

The 2874 is Milwaukee's full-size M18 FUEL pipe threader. Milwaukee's published specification material lists 1/8–2 inch pipe capacity and explicitly identifies RIDGID 12-R and Reed R12+ die heads as compatible.

Milwaukee also sells its own full-size forged-aluminum heads from 1/2 through 2 inches. Current head listings identify compatibility with the Milwaukee 2874, RIDGID 700 Power Drive and DEWALT DCE700, which creates a useful shared full-size portable ecosystem.

Alloy vs. high-speed dies

Milwaukee offers both alloy and high-speed portable dies across the full-size range. Its current high-speed die pages explicitly state stainless-steel capability, while the alloy versions are the ordinary choice for less demanding materials.

This is a useful reminder that “the tool can thread stainless” is incomplete by itself. The power drive, head and installed dies all have to support the material. If a used kit includes alloy heads/dies, verify whether the intended stainless work requires a different die set.

ONE-KEY and cordless workflow are secondary to compatibility

Both current Milwaukee families emphasize cordless mobility, control features and ONE-KEY inventory/security functions. Those features can matter on a crew, but they do not change the basic selection hierarchy.

First establish pipe size, NPT requirement, material and head family. Then compare battery investment, service frequency, tool weight, support-arm workflow and electronic features. If the job requires 2-inch pipe, the compact 2870 is eliminated regardless of battery preference.

What carries over between the two systems?

The M18 battery platform creates some shared ownership value, and Milwaukee's replacement die sets have broad compatibility claims across many portable head families. However, complete compact and full-size die heads are different interfaces.

That means a contractor evaluating an upgrade should inventory both batteries and threading heads. The battery may carry over while the die-head investment does not. Use the Die & Die Head Finder for the exact machine/head relationship before ordering.

Support arm, kickback control and die-head retention

Portable threading produces substantial reaction torque, so the support arrangement is part of the operating system rather than an optional convenience. Milwaukee supplies dedicated support-arm hardware with its current kits and describes AUTOSTOP kickback control as an additional protection feature on both current threading platforms. Electronic control does not replace correct pipe support, head engagement or the operating instructions in the manual.

The 2874 also uses a die-head retention lock and side-grip arrangement intended to reduce the need to contact a spinning head while starting a thread. The 2870 applies similar design priorities in a more compact format. These features are useful when comparing current cordless systems with older portable drives, but they should be evaluated after the correct size and head family are established.

What to verify in a Milwaukee kit or used-tool listing
